What An Air Fryer Does Well And What It Doesn’t
Excellent at: chips, roast potatoes, chicken pieces, wings, samosas, sausages, fish fillets, reheating anything that should be crisp. Genuinely better than an oven for all of it, and much faster because there is almost no preheating.
Not good at: anything wet-battered — the batter drips through the basket before it sets. Large whole roasts do not fit. It will not replace a full oven for baking cakes or bread.
Using it properly
Do not overfill the basket. This is the mistake everyone makes on day one. Air needs to move around the food; a packed basket steams instead of crisping and people conclude the appliance does not work. Cook in two batches — it is fast enough that this costs you very little time.
Shake or turn halfway through. Toss food in a teaspoon of oil first for the best colour; completely dry food comes out pale.
Wash the basket after every use. Fat builds up on the mesh and starts to smoke on later cooks. Wipe the element occasionally too, with the unit cold and unplugged.
