The market is full of units at twenty-five thousand shillings that boil water fine for four months and then fail — usually the switch, sometimes the element. Buying three of those costs more than buying this once.
This Philips runs 1850W through a concealed flat element, which means it boils fast and the inside is a smooth surface you can actually clean. Exposed coil elements collect scale in the crevices and are impossible to get properly clean, which is why they eventually give the water a taste.

Getting Years Out Of An Electric Kettle
Descale it. That is the whole secret, and almost nobody does it. Ugandan water leaves mineral scale on the element, scale insulates the element from the water, and an insulated element runs hotter and hotter until it burns out. A kettle that dies at eighteen months almost always died of scale.
Once a month: fill it a third with white vinegar and the rest with water, boil, leave it an hour, pour it out, rinse three times, boil once with clean water and discard. Ten minutes of attention, several extra years of kettle.
Rinse the spout filter under a tap while you are at it.
Practical notes
Do not fill above the maximum mark — it will spit boiling water out of the spout. Do not fill below minimum either; the boil-dry cut-out will trip and repeatedly tripping it wears the switch.
An 1850W kettle draws real current. Give it a wall socket rather than sharing an extension with a fridge and a television, which is how extension leads overheat.
If you want hot water permanently on tap rather than boiling each time, look at a hot and cold water dispenser instead — though it will not give you a rolling boil for cooking. For coffee specifically, our coffee maker handles the whole job.
