Pixel Steam Iron With Ceramic Soleplate

A steam iron does in one pass what a dry iron does in four, and once you have used a good one you will not go back. Steam relaxes the fibres so the crease falls out under light pressure. With a dry iron you are essentially pressing the crease flat with heat and force, which takes longer and is harder on the fabric.

This Pixel has a ceramic soleplate, and that is the part worth paying attention to. Cheap aluminium plates drag on cotton and catch on synthetic fabric. Ceramic glides. On a basket of shirts that difference is the whole ironing session.

How To Stop A Steam Iron Dying Early

Scale kills irons in Uganda, exactly the way it kills kettles. Tap water leaves mineral deposits in the steam chamber, the vents block, and then one day the iron spits brown water onto a white shirt. That is not a fault, that is scale.

Two fixes. Use filtered or boiled-and-cooled water where you can. And empty the tank after every session rather than leaving water standing in it for a week — standing water is what deposits scale.

Every couple of months, fill it halfway with a vinegar and water mix, heat it, hold the steam button over a sink for a minute, then flush twice with clean water. Wipe the soleplate cold with a damp cloth.

    Using it well

Set the temperature to the fabric, not to maximum. Start with the lowest-temperature items — synthetics — and work up to cotton and linen as the plate heats. Going the other way means waiting for it to cool.

Iron dark clothes inside out to avoid shine. Never leave it face down on a board while heated, and never iron over a zip or a button with full pressure — that is how ceramic plates get scored.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a steam iron in Uganda?

This Pixel with a ceramic soleplate is UGX 74,000, down from UGX 80,000. A steam iron does in one pass what a dry iron does in four, which is worth the small price difference.

Why does my steam iron spit brown water?

Scale in the steam chamber. Use filtered or boiled-and-cooled water, empty the tank after every session rather than leaving water standing, and flush the steam iron with a vinegar solution every couple of months.

Why does a ceramic plate matter?

Cheap aluminium plates drag on cotton and catch on synthetics. Ceramic glides. Across a full basket of shirts that difference is the whole ironing session.
