How To Use An Extension Cable Safely
Add up what you plug in. Three thousand watts sounds like a lot until you put a kettle (1850W) and an iron (1200W) on the same extension cable and you are already over. Heaters, kettles, irons, microwaves and ovens are the heavy items — one of those per extension, not two.
Never daisy-chain. Plugging one extension into another is how the rating gets exceeded without anyone noticing, and it is the most common cause of extension fires anywhere in the world.
Unroll it fully. A cable coiled up on a drum while carrying a heavy load cannot shed heat, and it will get hot in the middle of the coil where you cannot see it.
Signs to act on
If the plug or the socket body is warm to the touch, you are overloading it — unplug something. If you smell hot plastic, disconnect at the wall immediately and replace the unit. If a plug fits loosely and wobbles in the socket, replace it; loose contacts arc and arcing starts fires.
Never run one under a carpet or a rug where heat cannot escape and damage cannot be seen.
