Midea 1L Rice Cooker With Steaming Basket

A rice cooker does one thing and does it perfectly every time, which is more than can be said for most of us with a sufuria on a gas ring. Measure the rice, measure the water, press down the switch, walk away. When the water is absorbed the cooker senses it and drops automatically to Keep Warm. No burnt bottom, no gluey top, no standing over it.

The steaming basket is the underrated half of this appliance. It sits above the rice and steams vegetables, fish or matooke while the rice cooks underneath — two parts of a meal on one plug, which matters when your kitchen has two rings and four things to cook.

Getting Rice Right In A Rice Cooker

Rinse the rice first, two or three changes of water until it runs mostly clear. This removes surface starch and it is the difference between separate grains and a sticky mass. Most complaints about rice cookers trace back to unrinsed rice.

Water ratio: roughly one and a half cups of water to one cup of rice for ordinary long grain, adjusted to taste. Use the cup that came with the cooker, not a mug — the markings inside the pot are calibrated to it.

Leave the lid closed for ten minutes after it switches to Keep Warm. The rice finishes steaming in its own heat during that time. Opening it immediately gives you wet rice on top and firm rice underneath. Then fluff with the paddle, not a metal spoon, which will damage the non-stick coating.

    Sizing

One litre suits a household of three to five. If you routinely cook for more, tell us and we will show you what larger capacities we have in stock, since this range changes.

Wash the inner pot by hand with a soft cloth. Never use steel wool on it — once the non-stick is scratched, rice sticks and burns and the cooker becomes worse than a sufuria.

For general cooking rather than rice specifically, look at our home appliances range or the gas cookers. Midea’s full range is on the official Midea site. Countrywide delivery from Katwe — call +256 702 058341.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a rice cooker in Uganda?

This Midea 1-litre with a steaming basket is UGX 104,000, down from UGX 148,000. One litre suits a household of three to five and comes with a 1 year warranty.

Why does rice come out sticky in a rice cooker?

Unrinsed rice, almost always. Rinse two or three times until the water runs mostly clear before it goes in the rice cooker. That removes surface starch and is the difference between separate grains and a sticky mass.

What water ratio should I use?

Roughly one and a half cups of water to one cup of long grain rice, using the cup that came with the unit. The markings inside the pot are calibrated to that cup, not to a mug.
