Description
Hoffmans HM-3009 Coffee Maker, 1.5 Litres
A coffee maker is worth owning in a country that grows some of the best coffee in the world and mostly drinks instant. Uganda exports Robusta and Arabica that people queue for in Europe, and it costs less here than the imported instant does. A drip machine is the simplest way to actually make use of that.
This Hoffmans holds 1.5 litres — around twelve cups — which is why it works for an office, a guest house, a small restaurant, or a household where more than one person drinks coffee in the morning and nobody wants to make it twice.

Making Better Coffee In A Drip Coffee Maker
Grind matters more than machine. Drip brewing wants a medium grind, roughly like coarse sand. Too fine and the water sits in the basket and overflows; too coarse and it runs straight through and you get weak, sour coffee. Buy from a roaster who will grind for drip if you ask.
Rough starting ratio: one heaped tablespoon of ground coffee per cup of water, then adjust to taste. Most people under-dose and then conclude their machine is weak.
Do not leave coffee on the warming plate for more than about half an hour. It keeps cooking and turns bitter and flat. If people drink slowly through the morning, decant into a flask instead.
Cleaning and descaling
Rinse the permanent filter and the basket after every brew — old coffee oils go rancid and taint everything afterwards. That stale taste people blame on the beans is usually a dirty filter basket.
Descale every couple of months. Run a full cycle of half white vinegar, half water through it with no coffee, then two full cycles of clean water to flush. Ugandan tap water scales up the heating element exactly as it does in a kettle, and a scaled element runs slow and eventually fails.
If you only want hot water rather than brewed coffee, a hot and cold water dispenser covers that more cheaply. Browse the rest of our kitchen appliances, or read up on how drip machines work. Countrywide delivery from Katwe, +256 702 058341.
