Why A Fridge Guard Matters More In Uganda Than A Surge Protector
This is the part most people have backwards, so it is worth being clear about.
A surge protector handles spikes — a sudden jump in voltage, usually from lightning or a fault on the line. Useful, and worth having on a television or a computer.
But spikes are not what kills fridges here. Low voltage is. When the supply sags — which happens constantly on a loaded line in Kampala, and far more upcountry — a compressor motor cannot start properly. It draws heavy current trying, overheats, and the windings degrade. Do that a few hundred times over a couple of years and the compressor fails.
A surge protector does nothing about that. It is watching for the opposite problem. A fridge guard watches for both, which is exactly why we push it so hard.
The restart delay
The other half of the job. When power returns after a cut, the pressure inside a compressor has not equalised yet. Switching it straight back on forces it to start against that pressure, which is brutal on the motor. The delay gives it a few minutes to settle. On a day with three or four outages, that feature alone earns its money.
