Buying a fridge in Uganda is one of those purchases people get wrong in a very specific way. They walk in with a budget, get talked into the biggest box that fits it, and then spend five years cooling air they never needed. This is the conversation we have across the counter in Katwe most weeks, written down.
What size do you actually need
Size is the first decision and the one that matters most, because it sets both the price and what you pay on the meter every month.
- Under 150 litres. One or two people, a bedsitter or a hostel room. Milk, drinks, leftovers and a little meat.
- 150 to 220 litres. Three to five people shopping weekly. This is where most Ugandan households land and where the value sits.
- 250 to 350 litres. Five to seven people, or a family buying meat in bulk once a month.
- Above 350 litres. Large households, or you are running a bar, a shop or a small restaurant.
If you are storing crates of drinks or bulk meat for a business, you do not want a bigger fridge. You want a chest freezer, which costs less per litre and holds its temperature far longer when the power goes.
Single door or double door
A single door fridge has a small freezer compartment inside the main cabinet. It is cheaper, uses less power, and the freezer section frosts up quickly because it shares air with the fridge. Fine if you freeze a bit of meat and some ice.
A double door keeps the freezer completely separate with its own door. Things stay properly frozen, the fridge section stops icing over, and you open only the half you need so less cold escapes. If you freeze regularly, this is worth the extra money.

Anything dramatically below these figures is either a much smaller unit than you were told, refurbished, or has no real warranty behind it. Ask which of the three it is.
The mistake that kills fridges here
Voltage. Not brand, not size. Our supply swings, and a compressor hit by a surge or starved by low voltage fails years early. That failure is not a manufacturing fault, so the warranty will not cover it.
A fridge guard costs about UGX 29,000 and cuts the power when voltage goes out of range, then restores it after a delay so the compressor is not restarted under pressure. On a fridge costing several hundred thousand shillings, refusing one makes no sense.
Running it cheaply on Yaka
Leave a hand width of space behind and above the fridge so the coils can shed heat. A fridge pushed flat against a wall in a hot kitchen works harder for the same result.
Keep it out of direct sun and away from the cooker. Never put hot food straight in. Defrost a manual freezer before the ice gets thicker than your finger, because ice is insulation and the motor runs longer fighting it.
A fuller fridge holds cold better than an empty one. If yours is half empty, a few bottles of water in the base will steady the temperature and cut the running cost.
Buying a fridge in Uganda without regret
Measure the gap in your kitchen before you shop, including the door swing. Count the people you actually cook for. Decide honestly whether you freeze weekly or rarely. Then budget for the guard as part of the fridge, not as an extra.

Questions we get about buying a fridge in Uganda
Is a bigger fridge always better value?
No. A fridge you never fill costs you every month on the meter for space you are not using. Match the litres to the people you cook for, then spend what you saved on a guard and a better brand.
Are refurbished fridges worth it?
Rarely. You are usually buying somebody else’s failing compressor with no warranty behind it. The saving disappears the first time it needs a gas refill.
How long should a fridge last?
Ten to fifteen years if it is protected from voltage swings and the coils are kept clear. Most fridges that die at year three in Uganda died of electricity, not of age.
Can I lay it down for transport?
Try not to. If it travels on its side, stand it upright for at least four hours before switching on so the compressor oil settles back. We deliver upright and crated, which avoids the question.
