A voltage protector is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy for an appliance in Uganda. It costs about UGX 29,000. The compressor it protects costs several hundred thousand shillings to replace, and the warranty will not pay for it, because voltage damage is not a manufacturing fault. That is the whole argument in four sentences.
What a voltage protector actually does
It sits between the wall socket and your appliance and watches the incoming voltage. When the supply climbs too high or drops too low, it cuts the power. When the voltage returns to a safe range, it waits a couple of minutes and then switches back on.
That delay is the clever part. Restarting a compressor immediately after a cut forces it to work against pressure that has not yet equalised, and doing that repeatedly is what wears motors out. The wait costs you nothing and buys the machine years.
Why this matters more in Uganda
Our supply moves around. You will see it in the lights dimming when a neighbour starts a welder, in the brief blackouts that come back hard, and in whole streets running low in the evening peak. None of that is dramatic enough to notice properly, and all of it is quietly shortening the life of everything plugged in.
Low voltage is the one people miss. Everyone worries about surges, but a motor asked to run on a starved supply draws more current, overheats and dies just as surely. A protector catches both ends.
Which appliances need a voltage protector
Anything with a compressor or a control board. In practice that means:
- Fridges and freezers. Highest priority. The compressor is the single most expensive part in your kitchen.
- Air conditioners. Same reasoning, larger compressor, larger bill.
- Televisions. The power board is usually what dies, and on a large screen that repair is not far off the price of a new set.
- Washing machines with electronic controls, and microwaves.
A kettle, an iron or a hot plate is just a heating element. Those are far less fussy and do not need one.

What it does not do
A voltage protector is not a stabiliser and it is not a UPS. It does not smooth the supply or keep your appliance running through a blackout. It disconnects, waits, and reconnects. For most homes that is exactly what is needed and it is a fraction of the price of a stabiliser.
It also does not protect against a direct lightning strike on the line. Nothing at this price does. Unplug during a serious storm.

The arithmetic
Our fridge guard is UGX 29,000. A replacement compressor with labour runs into the hundreds of thousands, and that is if a technician can source the right one. A new fridge starts around UGX 419,000.
So the protector is roughly five percent of the cheapest fridge we sell, and it is the difference between a machine that lasts twelve years and one that dies in three. People still argue about it at the counter. They stop arguing after the first failure.
Fitting one
There is nothing to it. Plug the protector into the wall, plug the appliance into the protector, done. No electrician, no wiring. One per appliance is the correct approach, because each one needs to cut power to the thing it is guarding.
If you are in a rental or a place where the supply is visibly poor, fit them to everything that matters on day one rather than after something fails.
Common questions about a voltage protector
Does it use much power itself?
Almost none. The monitoring circuit draws a trickle you will not see on your Yaka meter.
Why does it keep cutting out?
It is doing its job. Frequent cutting means your supply is genuinely unstable, which is useful information. Talk to your landlord or an electrician about the wiring on your line.
Will one protector cover the whole house?
No. These are plug in units for individual appliances. Whole house protection is a switchboard job for a qualified electrician and costs considerably more.
Do new appliances not have this built in?
Some have basic protection. Very few have the delayed restart, which is the part that saves compressors. Assume yours does not unless the manual says otherwise.
